Nina Dobrev and Shaun White took their romance to new heights by getting engaged in New York City. The couple has been together since 2019 and officially announced their relationship in 2020. Shaun popped the question beneath a beautiful arch adorned with white roses. Nina humorously captioned her engagement photos on Instagram, “RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé.”

Shaun White’s dreamy and romantic proposal

After two previous attempts at proposing—one during a dirt-biking accident that left Nina with a knee injury, and another during a trip to Cape Town—Shaun was determined to find the perfect moment. Yet, as fate would have it, Nina wasn’t feeling her best in the days leading up to the proposal. Opting for a seemingly ordinary week in late October, Shaun surprised her by whisking her off to the Golden Swan restaurant. He unveiled the sparkling ring under the floral arch. “I went into shock,” Dobrev recalled to Vogue. “I just froze and stared at him.”

In a clever twist, Shaun orchestrated the proposal by having his publicist send Nina a fake invitation for an intimate CFDA/Vogue dinner hosted by Anna Wintour at the Golden Swan. The 34-year-old actress couldn’t help but chuckle at the convincing invitation.

On the day of the proposal, dressed in a chic head-to-toe Chanel ensemble, Nina ascended the stairs to what she thought was a magazine shoot. Feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness, she was concerned about making Anna Wintour wait. When she opened the door, she was met with the sight of only a photographer, Shaun, and the stunning white rose arch. “He said all the right things,” Dobrev recounted, mentioning how she momentarily blacked out but vividly remembered the heartfelt proposal.

Nina and Shaun began dating in 2019 and reportedly moved in together before the pandemic. They made their relationship public in 2020. Shaun announced his retirement from competitive snowboarding after the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Earlier this year, he shared with PEOPLE a glimpse into their future. He said, “We’re just enjoying our time together right now. No pressure. I told her, ‘Look, after the Olympics, I finally have the freedom to do whatever. Let’s just have fun, be together, and support each other.’” He added, “But you never know. We’ll see what happens,” hinting at the exciting journey ahead for the couple.
